Look How We’ve Changed!

The Athletic & Wellness Centre has just completed phase 1 of an ongoing re-organization with some upgrades. The changes were made with the following objectives in mind:
– Remove/replace less frequently used equipment from the floor and replace with more relevant equipment/useable space
– Create a clearly marked safe zone for personal training and group fitness courses
– Reduce the noise level over the Athletics & Recreation offices
– Support a more results-driven, functional training environment

We are achieving this by:
– Re-organizing equipment to create more efficient training areas
– Removing and relocating several treadmills from above the A&R office area
– Creating a results-driven core training zone with informational/instructional posters
– Leaving certain areas open for future upgrades such as the addition of inclusive fitness equipment

Fitness services at the AWC this summer

Journey 2 Lose results

The Journey 2 Lose program is a fitness competition with a focus on fat loss and overall health awareness. It is an initiative delivered through the Fitness Services team and supported by other areas of the CCSAI and the College. The first group of J2L participants began as a group of 25 together in January 2016 and have completed their final weigh-in on Friday, April 29th, 2016.

Each participant was given a support package to begin and had a plethora of support options from services within the AWC along the way. The group worked hard week in week out, had monthly meetings, weekly bootcamp classes, regular check-in opportunities with our wellness team and regular motivational posts from not just our coaches but from participants as well who were willing to share their journey.

It was an emotional, educational and overall thrilling experience for all those involved.

It is with great pleasure that I announce the first ever champion of the Athletic & Wellness Centre’s Journey 2 Lose Program.

With a total of 18.4 pounds lost and 8.4 total inches lost is Andrea Nelson

In 2nd place with 13 pounds lost is Michelle Muscatello

In 3rd place with 10.8 pounds lost is Alia Rhule

As mentioned, the 1st place winner will receive a prize of $300.00 value. Please contact us to arrange delivery of this package.

The J2L team wants to thank all of the participants for their hard work and commitment to the program. We wish you all the best on your continued journey to a happier, healthier you and look forward to seeing you all in the AWC in the future.

Centennial Weightlifting Club members raising the bar

The Centennial Weightlifting Club was at Canadore College in North Bay this month for the annual Ontario Scholastics Weightlifting Championships. We had two members of the Club participating: Deidre-Anne Montague in the Female 75kg category and Dylan Wong in the Male 69kg category. Dylan Wong is a Centennial student currently in year 3 of the collaborative Nursing Degree at Ryerson. Deidre-Anne is a 3rd year Centennial student completing the Business Administration – Business Operations Advanced Diploma program. This annual competition is for any registered full time student in Ontario that is also a member in good standing with the Ontario Weightlifting Association. This year’s competition had a total of 58 lifters who competed individually in their respective weight classes.

Deidre-Anne finished with a 107kg (235.4lb) total. She had a tough category going up against lifters from Laurentian University, Nippissing University, and UofT Mississauga. In a controversial finish she was awarded the bronze medal, 1kg away from the silver medal. Deidre-Anne is a novice lifter who posted personal bests in competition and gained a lot of respect from spectators. Deidre was also the runner up for the Best Female Novice Lifter award.

Dylan Wong is in his 3rd year of competition at this annual event. He began 3 years ago in the 62kg category and has since moved up a weight class to the 69kg category. Dylan edged out a lifter from Laurentian University and posted a 197kg (433.4lb) total to win the Gold medal in his weight class. Dylan was the first runner up for the Best Overall Lifter Award in the competition of 58 athletes.

Free AWC Membership for College Employees

Starting Friday, April 1st, 2016, all active full- and part-time Centennial College employees can enjoy a free membership at the AWC. Please note there is a regular employee rate for fitness classes and programs such as High Intensity Interval Training and Beginner’s Muay Thai. Visit us at the Guest Services desk with your current employee ID and we’ll be happy to get you started as a new member of the AWC. New members receive a tour of the AWC and one free session with an AWC wellness coach or personal trainer.

Canada’s National Jr. Volleyball Team at the AWC

Team Canada’s national junior volleyball team showed their prowess at the Athletic & Wellness Centre during practices held throughout the month of August.

Centennial College students, faculty, and staff were invited to watch volleyball being played at its highest level and to meet and hear from the coaches and players at the free open house held on August 27th. What great skills we witnessed at the AWC!

Free drop-in course

HIIT-training

Course description: This class will use a mix of strength-training, various cardio and agility equipment to train participants to their peak summer shape. Different areas of the AWC will be used to take advantage of the variety of training styles that will challenge participants to their full potential. Expect full body strength gains, fat loss and an increase in athleticism. This class will challenge you!
